FAQs
How do I request a workshop for my organization?
Email us at info@thehairinitiative.org to schedule a workshop. Please note we require 3 weeks notice for scheduling a workshop.
We offer interactive ZOOM and in-person socially distanced workshops.
Our limit per ZOOM workshop is 15 attendees.
Our in-person socially distanced workshop is limited to 10 attendees. This number can be extended to more if the location space is large enough to allow attendees to remain at safe distances from one another.
Do you do workshops outside of Oklahoma City?
Yes! The Hair Initiate is a statewide organization that has traveled hundreds of miles across the state making sure our education is accessible to anyone that needs it.
How long are the workshops?
Our workshops are 2 hours in length including time for questions with our knowledgeable licensed stylists.
Do I have to be a foster parent to attend a workshop?
The Hair Initiative knows how important this education is for foster and adoptive parents, but we also know how many caregivers in the community need this education as well! Any caregiver can attend our workshops.
Can I bring my child to the workshop?
Absolutely! We highly encourage your child to attend with you or by themselves so they can see firsthand how to care for their own hair. Please note that personal consultations for your child with the stylists during the workshop are not permitted, but please feel free to schedule one with the many great stylists we partner with!
Is childcare provided at your workshops?
The Hair initiative does not provide childcare, but the organization hosting the workshop may choose to do so. Please check with the host of the workshop about any childcare needs/concerns.
Am I eligible for your free hair kit?
Every attendee receives a hair hygiene kit per child after our workshops. If you are a foster parent, please include your caseworker’s information in the request. If you are not a caseworker or a foster parent, please include that information in your request and we will do our best to accommodate your need.
What is the price of a hair kit?
Our kits have been a labor of love since day one. We knew we needed to provide dignified products and tools in a secure and waterproof bag to address the inequity in access to hair hygiene across the state. The hair hygiene kits are filled with basic hair tools primary for highly textured hair. The price for the girl kits is $15 and the boys kits are $8. If you’re able to donate to offset the cost of these dignified hair hygiene kits, that is appreciated; however, no one will be turned away for their inability to pay.
I’m a stylist and want to get involved. How can I help?
There are various ways to assist The Hair Initiative ensure every child has the dignity of a good hair day!
Join our network
We need stylists across the state to refer clients to. We ask that the stylist provide a discount of 10% to each client referred to them by The Hair Initiative.
Volunteer for an event
We partner with other organizations to provide free hair services throughout the year (e.g. back to school hair bash) and we need stylists for all hair types to lend their services for an hour or two.
Volunteer for helping congregate care facilities
We also provide free hair cuts/hair styles on a regular basis to the Juvenile Detention Center and congregate care facilities (shelters, group homes, etc) This would be a monthly donation of your time and services for an hour or two.
Educate
We educate caregivers and youth across the state! If you’re interested in teaching our curriculum or some of our personalized programming this opportunity is for you!
