THE DETAILS
Our workshops are catered to the caregiver. At the end of each workshop a survey is conducted and The Hair Initiative team works to incorporate that feedback into our workshops or to generate further programing to ensure we are meeting the expectations and needs of the caregivers we serve. The Hair Initiative workshops provide a knowledgeable, understanding and judgement-free space for questions and conversations regarding proper care for highly textured hair. Our workshops are conducted by experienced and licensed hair stylists with a passion for helping educate the community about proper hair hygiene.
Our workshop is offered via interactive ZOOM and in-person while observing all necessary COVID protocol.
When you attend one of The Hair Initiative's workshops you should expect a comfortable and interactive environment to learn and ask questions. Each workshop has time for Q&A with the stylist and our in-person workshops have hands-on time with products and tools and each attendee walks away with a kit per child so they can get started on putting their new knowledge to work!
THE BACKGROUND
When we first set out to find out why children of color in the foster care system weren't getting their hair hygiene needs met, we started asking questions to various people in the foster community. What we learned was that many caregivers didn't have the basic knowledge about caring for highly textured hair and therefore didn't even know where to start.
We also found out that many caregivers didn't know where to turn for information. Some found many of the online resources overwhelming and others didn't know how to approach a stranger about what to do and almost all of them feared judgement. We knew that education had to be one of the pillars of our comprehensive resource, but not just any education - engaging education in a judgement-free space.
Our workshops are important because we are helping caregivers become more confident in addressing their child's hair. By giving caregivers a unique space like ours to learn in, we are ensuring they have the basic information they need to ensure their child's hair hygiene needs can always be met.
